Legal Aid The legal aid programme has been very successful and has contributed in overturning or reducing a large number of cases where persons are sentenced to death, amputation or cross amputation. Our Legal Aid Officers and network of volunteer lawyers have represented hundreds of clients. In many cases, they have successfully overturned judgements or reduced them, as well as taking up cases against human rights violators. We have no doubt that this has and will continue to have a positive effect in deterring others from committing human rights violations in the future. This has proved to be an effective preventative method. This provides the victims of torture with redress and provides our staff with the assurance and security to continue carrying- out their work effectively. It also functions as a clear and unmistakeable signal to the perpetrators that they will no longer be allowed to enjoy total impunity. |
