Research and Freedom of Expression
The freedom expression programme began in 2003; it has been a successful
programme. The activities involved are as follows:
• Researching and providing information of cases of human rights
violations and torture
• Campaign on issue on media freedom and freedom of expression
• Raising awareness of human rights in Sudan and internationally
• Lobbying and campaigning on human rights issues on local, national
and international
The programme has been active in voicing and increasing awareness on
the human rights situation in Sudan in local and national levels. Also,
the programme has been active in widening it journalist network to lobby
and report on cases of human rights violations and torture in Sudan.
Over the past 12 months, the programme has conducted several activities
to raise awareness on the situation of human rights in Sudan and Freedom
of Expression as follows:
• Providing information of cases of torture and/or human rights
situation for press releases and reports
• Issuing press releases and newsletter, Aswat, in Arabic in bi-monthly
basis covering KCHRED activities, activities with other organisations,
civil society, human rights issues and concerns.
• Running the operation of Human Rights Education and Information
Resource Center, the first of it kind in Sudan, for the use by members
of the center and SOAT networks, journalist, legal professionals, students,
researchers, academics, human rights activists and civil society and NGO
staff.
• Commemorated the International Days related to Human Rights (such
as 12 December International Day of Human Rights, International Day for
Solidarity with victims of Torture, International Day for Freedom of Expression…etc).
• Organizing Forums, workshops and debate sessions on current issues
and concerns related to Human Rights in the Sudan.
• Initiating activities and campaigns in support and defence of
freedom of expression.
• Liaising and coordinating with other SOAT programmes in campaigns,
lobbying and disseminating human rights awareness, training and education.
• Participation in conferences representing SOAT
