Documentation
Documentation is important as a means of recording human
rights violations particularly in the field of torture. Careful accurate
documentation ensures that perpetrators of torture will not be able to
escape prosecution due to lack of evidence.
The documentation process follows well-established guidelines;
interviews with survivors detailing their experiences are recorded accurately
and SOAT publishes the names of perpetrators of torture and details of
the detention centres. These processes ensure that the perpetrators of
torture can no longer act with impunity. SOAT’s network of lawyers,
students, trade unionists, women's rights activists, journalists and doctors
in Sudan and around the world are the source of our information regarding
the human rights situation in Sudan.
SOAT has documented over 350 cases of torture and other
human rights violations over the last 12 months, including some video
testimonies by victims, along with 169 medical treatment cases. We have
produced 7 reports, through our London and Khartoum offices, over 60 press
releases and 5 bi–monthly newsletters both in London and Khartoum.
This has been of considerable significance, raising awareness in the international
community and increasing the pressure on the Sudanese government to prevent
human rights abuses occurring within its territory. The documentation
programme also reports all activities of the organisation, video's and
pictures
SOAT has been extremely active in documenting all cases
of human rights abuses. At SOAT’s Sudan offices, lawyers and staff
have been active in reaching out to as many people as possible and the
international and national promotion of SOAT has significantly increased
the public profile of the organisation globally. In addition to this,
we are committed to ensuring transparency of all the organisation’s
activities. As a result of these different factors, more people have felt
encouraged to come forward for the purpose of reporting incidents and
filing complaints.
Cases of torture and human rights abuses are publicised
through regular press releases, monthly newsletters, periodicals and reports.
