NO TO TORTURE
We request the government of Sudan to include the criminal act clear criminalization
of torture or tight definition for torture as identified by the UN convention
against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment;
We believe that the ratification of CAT will enhance human rights protection
in Sudan;
Eradication of torture will be achievable once the government has ratified
the convention (CAT) as we aim to build national effective coalition to
further the
implementation on the ground to monitor implementation of the convention;
As we know that CAT obliges the government to ensure that acts within
the definition of torture prosecuted within their national legal system;
We call upon the government of Sudan to:
Immediately ratify the UN convention against torture and other cruel,
inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
Promptly, impartially and effectively investigate all allegations of torture
or illtreatment according to the UN manual on the Effective Investigation
and Documentation of Torture and other cruel inhuman or Degrading Punishments
(the Istanbul protocols 1999).

Human Rights Education Conference
HRE is becoming an essential
component in raising awareness of human rights. This is an ongoing activity
which provides training on human rights, torture prevention and educating
on the basis of human rights. SOAT considers that this plays an important
part in the recovery process for survivors of torture, helping them to
gain a different perspective on their experiences, and offering ways in
which they can take positive action in fighting torture.
As to fulfil this programme,
SOAT, in collaboration with Ahfad University for women, embarked on a
major HRE Conference in Khartoum, the first conference of its kind to
take place in Sudan. The conference took place on 15-19 December 2003.
